Adios, DOMA!

I just wanted to drop a quick note in celebration today.  If you haven't heard the US Supreme Court ruled against DOMA, the Defense of Marriage Act.  This now allows same-sex couples who were and will be married by law in a state permitting same sex marriages to be recognized federally.

"This morning the Supreme Court of the United States struck down the Defense of Marriage Act with a 5–4 ruling, allowing the federal government to recognize legal marriages between same-sex partners. From here, couples married in states where gay marriage is legal will be able to receive federal tax, survivor, estate, retirement, and health-care benefits that straight couples enjoy." ~ VanityFair.com   Read the article here.

This is such a big step in the right direction!  I cannot say how excited we are over here.  Not only did our nation have a monumental win today but we were also blessed with the overturn of Prop 8 in California, also by the Supreme Court.

Two huge victories in one morning.  We still have many mountains to climb to ensure equality for everyone, but it's days like today that give us hope for a brighter future - one of tolerance, acceptance and love.

Hugs for all,

~Xx Night

  1. 37 states to go but Congrats!

We've had 8 years of equal rights here in South Africa and there is still a long way to go but every battle won contributes to a total victory in the war!
